Garam Masala Spiced Grilled Shrimp with Fresh Mango Salsa

I came across a version of this recipe on Epicurious.com and modified it to suit my own taste. The Indian spice blend of garam masala (ground cumin, coriander, cardamom, black pepper, cinnamon, cloves and nutmeg) imparts the shrimp with an amazing aroma and the fresh mango salsa pairs really well as a condiment.

Ingredients:
2 lbs. medium shrimp on shell (deveined)

MARINADE:
1 tbsp. garam masala*
1 fresh jalapeno pepper, seeded and chopped
Juice of 1 orange
Juice of 1 lime
2 tbsp. chopped fresh cilantro
2 cloves garlic, minced
1/2 tsp. ground turmeric
2 tsp. ground ginger
1/3 cup vegetable oil

Fresh Mango Salsa: http://thegrubfiles.blogspot.com/2011/07/jerk-shrimp-with-mango-red-onion.html

*If you can't find garam masala in your local supermarket, just combine the following spices together for a quick version:

1 tbsp. ground cumin
1 1/2 tsp. ground coriander
1 1/2 tsp. ground cardamom
1 1/2 tsp. ground black pepper
1 tsp. ground cinnamon
1/2 tsp. ground cloves
1/2 tsp. ground nutmeg

1. Rinse the shrimp, pat dry and place into a bowl. Add all the marinade ingredients and combine well. Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate. Marinate for at least 30 minutes.

2. Prepare the mango salsa. Cover and refrigerate until ready to use.

3. Prepare your grill (heat the charcoal to medium high heat). Grill the shrimp in a grill pan (looks like a saute pan with holes in it), tossing occasionally, 4-5 minutes or until the shrimp is just cooked through.

4. Remove shrimp to a serving platter, garnish with fresh cilantro sprigs, and serve with lemon wedges and fresh mango salsa on the side.

Rinse shrimp and pat dry with paper towels.

Make the mango salsa, cover, and refrigerate until ready to use.
